Pakistan is one of the most water-stressed countries on Earth. What most citizens do not realise is that the underground reserves they depend on — groundwater — are being consumed far faster than they are being replenished.
The Numbers Are Alarming
Pakistan extracts approximately 55 billion cubic metres of groundwater annually, making it the third largest groundwater user in the world after India and China. In Lahore alone, the water table has dropped by nearly 1 metre per year for the past decade. In parts of Balochistan, traditional karez systems that fed villages for centuries are running dry.
As a researcher studying water systems across South Asia, the data I see is deeply concerning. Aquifer depletion is not a future risk — it is a present reality that is quietly worsening every year while public attention remains elsewhere.
"When an aquifer is depleted, it is not simply a matter of drilling deeper. Some geological formations, once drained, never refill within a human lifetime. We are making irreversible decisions by doing nothing."
What Is Driving the Depletion
Agriculture accounts for roughly 94% of Pakistan's water use. Much of this irrigation is flood-based — an extraordinarily wasteful method that saturates fields and allows the majority of water to evaporate or run off before crops can absorb it. The shift to drip irrigation, which is standard practice in water-efficient countries, remains slow and underfunded.
Urban demand is a secondary but rapidly growing contributor. Pakistan's cities are expanding at one of the fastest rates in the world. Municipal water infrastructure has not kept pace, pushing residents toward private extraction — deepening the crisis.
The Urban Tanker Economy Is a Symptom
In cities like Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Lahore, private water tankers fill the gap left by failing municipal systems. From a hydrological standpoint, these tankers — drawing from boreholes, wells, or commercial water plants — are tapping the same stressed aquifers. The tanker economy is not the cause of the crisis, but it is a direct reflection of how broken the formal water supply system has become.
What Must Change
Technology-driven platforms that organise and optimise water distribution — like the digital tanker services emerging in Pakistani cities — are a step in the right direction. Efficient last-mile delivery reduces waste. But they are not a substitute for the systemic, policy-level action needed to address the root cause.
