Pakistan is home to more glaciers than any country outside the polar regions. For centuries, those glaciers have been the country's natural water storage system — releasing meltwater through spring and summer to feed rivers and replenish aquifers. Climate change is now dismantling that system faster than any adaptation plan has anticipated.
The Glacier Crisis
Pakistan's approximately 7,000 glaciers are receding at an accelerating rate. In the short term, accelerated melting increases river flows — causing the catastrophic flooding that devastated one third of Pakistan in 2022. In the medium and long term, as glaciers thin and disappear, the seasonal meltwater that feeds the Indus system will diminish significantly.
Multiple research models project that water availability in the Indus basin could decline by 30-40% by mid-century under current emissions trajectories. Pakistan is, by multiple international assessments, among the top five countries most vulnerable to climate-driven water stress.

Monsoon Disruption
Pakistan's agricultural calendar was built around a predictable monsoon rhythm. That rhythm is now disrupted. Rainfall arrives in concentrated, extreme events rather than steady seasonal patterns — causing flooding followed by drought, destroying crops and washing away topsoil that took generations to build.
For urban residents, erratic monsoon patterns mean that the aquifer recharge they depend on — which occurs when rainwater percolates into the ground — is becoming less reliable. What falls as a downpour in one week does not recharge groundwater the same way that a steady month of moderate rain does.
Urban Adaptation Is Urgent
Technology's Role
Efficient water distribution is a critical part of climate adaptation. Every litre delivered to a household without waste, every delivery route optimised, every tanker filled to capacity rather than partially loaded — these small efficiencies compound at scale. Digital platforms that bring efficiency to the informal water supply chain are, in a small but real sense, climate adaptation tools.
But technology cannot substitute for policy. Pakistan needs a national water security strategy that treats the coming decade as a period of emergency adaptation. The window to act is narrowing — and the cost of delay is paid not by policymakers, but by the millions of Pakistani families whose water security grows more precarious every year.
